RED RAIDERS WIN BIG 12 TUSSLE

The championship round of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic came down to the final match Sunday at Auburn's Yarbrough Tennis Center.

Texas Tech's Raony Carvalho beat Oklahoma's Andrei Daescu 6-2, 3-6 6-4 at No. 1 singles to give the Red Raiders a 4-3 win and the Blue Gray title.

"First of all, this is as great of a college tennis match I have ever been a part of," Texas Tech coach Tim Siegel said. "It was a high-level match and both teams played hard."

The Red Raiders (16-1) are ranked 16th in the nation. Sunday's win over the 17th-ranked Sooners (12-2) was Tech's first over a Top 20 team.

It came down to the final match when Oklahoma's Ionut Beleleu beat Gonzalo Escobar 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

"OU has a great team with classy players, who played extremely well," Siegel said. "I can't say enough about our team, though. To play four matches in four days and to come out every match with more energy than the day before says a lot about them."

The first three rounds of the Blue-Gray tournament were at Lagoon Park. Because of the threat of rain Sunday, tournament officials decided Saturday to move the championship round to Auburn and play indoors at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.

"It's an honor to win this prestigious tournament," Siegel said. "The city of Montgomery does such a great job and I'm excited to come back next year."
